Commuter Rail Feasibility Study

The Greenville and Spartanburg County Planning Commissions' are jointly funding a Commuter Rail Feasibility Study.

Wilbur Smith Associates have been employed to conduct the study. The purpose of the study is three-fold: To determine if commuter rail offers an effective and financially feasible alternative mode of transportation; to provide local officials with data on potential investment requirements, and to determine what impact commuter rail service would have on the need for additional capacity improvements to Interstate 85. The study is scheduled for completion in June 1999.

2000 Census Complete County Committee

The Planning Commission will be working with a Citizens Advisory Committee over the next year to publicize the importance of Census 2000. This promotion will include three major efforts: Data Collection Support Activities; Recruiting Activities, and Promotional Activities. Data Collection Support Activities can include the identification of address lists to supplement the census address list, and the identification of sites where Questionnaire Assistance Centers could be located. Recruiting Activities include publicizing census jobs, and helping to find temporary office space for training centers.

Promotional Activities, which will be the primary emphasis of the committee, could include the production of public service announcements, working with local schools, conducting local events, and creating an Internet site, etc. The County's 2000 population figure will mean millions of dollars that can be available in state and federal grants and programs, so it is very important that the 2000 Census Count be as accurate as possible.
